ENG Sir John Franklin was the Sir Edmund Hillary of early Victorian times, a popular hero whose exploits were followed by a large public on both sides of the Atlantic. His last Arctic expedition set sale in 1845, by 1848 it had disappeared completely.

Noel Wright provides in this book a history of the various Arctic expeditions beginning in the 16th Century on up to Franklin's disappearance.
