ENG  During his final expedition in an attempt to traverse the Northwest Passage in 1845, Sir John Franklin (1786–1847), a British Royal Navy officer and explorer, and his expedition became icebound off King William Island in what is now Nunavut. The icebound ships were abandoned, and the entire crew died from causes such as starvation, hypothermia, and scurvy.
